Ligotti’s wielding of the uncanny is a means to drag the dreamworld into the “real” one, while providing a rebuttal to the latter’s self-evident self-importance.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDreams are an indiscriminate reel of information, melded without rhyme or reason. Either a pleasant freedom from reality or an anxious gauntlet that defies what we know to be true. “The Shadow, The Darkness” acts as a dream dreamt by its creator, a kaleidoscopic autobiography that floats out of time, recalling Ligotti’s life, but also his past and future work. In an interview with Jon Padgett, Ligotti describes an incident in which he collapsed due to issues with his digestive system—mirroring Grossvogel’s own collapse. In “The Shadow, The Darkness,” there is also the fictional \u003cem\u003eAn Investigation into the Conspiracy Against the Human Race\u003c\/em\u003e, which echoes Ligotti’s very real treatise on philosophical pessimism, but predates Ligotti’s \u003cem\u003eConspiracy\u003c\/em\u003e by eleven years. Grossvogel’s latest art exhibit, TSALAL No. 1, also recalls an earlier story in\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNoctuary, titled “The Tsalal.” And finally, there is the setting of Crampton itself, which is the title of the screenplay Ligotti co-wrote with Brendan Trenz.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor the Ligotti devotee, these facts will come swiftly upon reading “The Shadow, The Darkness.” Ligotti’s dream of real-life trauma, stark existentialism, and real-but-desolate locales becomes the reader’s dream of Ligotti himself.
